How we Became Green
In 1993, Barbara Pressman, General Manager of the Stanford Terrace Inn had recycle bins placed in each room, changed all printed material to recycled paper products, and started looking for other ways that the hotel could have a positive impact on the environment. This was the beginning of the hotel?s journey to becoming the first county certified green hotel in Palo Alto.
Shortly thereafter, Green Suites products were introduced into the hotel. Now, 90% of the chemicals used for cleaning are non-toxic and the amenities organic, non animal tested. Ten of the guest rooms have special air and water filters installed by Green Suites for guests with sensitivities to the environment.
In 2003, the hotel underwent an extensive audit by the city of Palo Alto and the county of Santa Clara to qualify as a ?green business?. In addition to low-flow toilets, energy efficient light bulbs, and recycled paper products, the hotel purchases renewable energy from the city of Palo Alto.
Today, years after purchasing the first blue recycling bin, we now are certified by the following organizations:
When this journey began, being ?green? was challenging and more costly than it is today. The Stanford Terrace Inn?s continued commitment to making environmental protection a priority for our guests and for our community has become part of the corporate culture. Every step we take makes a difference.
